Huge development in the ongoing transfer saga surrounding England International Andy Carroll. After a relatively successful year on loan at West Ham, the Irons have agreed a £15m fee for the striker with his parent club Liverpool according to BBC Sport.

Liverpool forward Andy Carroll has cited that he not see his future with current side West Ham United, or former club Newcastle United. The striker wanted to return to Liverpool and fight for a place in the side, according to reports in Newcastle newspaper The Chronicle. The paper quoted a source close to Carroll as saying:

“Andy is realistic about next season. He is not expecting to be at Newcastle or West Ham… He’s prepared to go back to Liverpool and fight for his place.”

The 24 year old striker has enjoyed an impressive season with West Ham, particularly in recent weeks where he has found the net in five of his last nine games for the East London club. Brendan Rodger’s decision last summer to send Carroll out on loan gave a strong indication that the forward did not feature in his long term plans. Here we look at where Carroll would be best suited to continue his career.

Carroll is a real handful for defenders when he is on form, see West Ham’s recent fixture against Manchester United where he troubled the centre back pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, not to mention David De Gea. One of his major strengths is his ability in the air, illustrated by his success rate of 65% when competing in aerial duels.

The problem with this, especially for Liverpool, is that to get the best out of Carroll the team tends to have to be very direct in it’s approach, something which Rodgers doesn’t like his teams to be. For example, when Carroll was at Newcastle a tactic employed would be to have Joey Barton play early crosses from the right hand side for Carroll to attack.

Carroll’s ability as a target man is good in the sense of his physicality, but often he is found lacking when it comes to bringing his teammates into play. His average pass accuracy of 61% suggests this much. This gives further credence to the assumption that Carroll is unlikely to feature in Rodgers plans. Particularly when you consider the attacking signings Rodgers has made since taking charge.

It can be said then, that Carroll is far better suited to the style of football at West Ham than at Liverpool. The tactics employed by Sam Allardyce play to the forwards strengths, as we have seen from his goal scoring return in recent weeks. The financial side of things seemed to be a stumbling block for a deal to take Carroll to West Ham permanently but that is obviously no longer the case.
